The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a major awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
